Road Trip to the Beautiful North

This weekend was wonderful! It didn't go as planned, but it went so much better then I had planned. The original plan, leave early Saturday morning and drive to Fireman's park to ride a loop of the IMMOO course. We got there Saturday morning and during the "Prebike" Chit Chat there was thunder, lightning, and a deluge of water coming from the sky. We attempted to ride out twice but after looking at the radar decided breakfast was a better idea! After breakfast we made the drive to the Cabin in Wautoma, WI. Ludster and I got to the cabin midday took a nap and ate again and then the FUN started.

This ride starts with me.. which is unsual! I am usually being prodded along by Ludster. "Hey.. let's go ride to Mt. Morris before we get rained on again." Ludster, "NO.. it's cold outside, my gear is wet, the road is a mess!" Then Tom rings in with, "I'll be your scooter guide!" And.. with that added "FUN" off we went. Yes it was cold, wet and I couldn't feel my feet... but it was PHENOMENAL! I had my own scooter guide like I was winning the race! I had a pace driver to keep me from slacking when I really wanted to! And.. I had the best cheerleader in my life, TOM saying "WOW, You look good out here today!". We rode to Mt. Morris... surprisingly only about 9 miles from the cabin. Ludster and I both thought it was 15 miles away. And then I did something I have never done....I climbed all the way to the top of Mt. Morris. It's been a year since I tried to climb to the top... and it was a great accomplishment for me. The elevation is 1,193 ft. When we got to the top, Ludster beat me up there of course! The guys said.. "Hey, want to do that again?". The weather was threatening, so it was time to ride back but I will be back to hill repeats at Mt. Morris. It was so exhilirating to conquer this after a rough bike test this week. We arrived home just before the thunder and lightning started another deluge. It was PERFECT TIMING! The 22 mile ride was just what I needed! I even got some pointers on climbing hills from the Ludster. He is going to be a great resource for me in the next four months leading up to Ironman!

A special thanks to TOM for being a great scooter guide! I can't wait to add that "FUN" to a long workout again soon!

As a side note: My bike was a mess! I cleaned it last night for an hour. But it was well worth it! I am grinning about this ride even now!

Bike Test Again

Last night we did our bike test again to show progress and strength. Our last bike test was on 2/17. Two months ago, I surprised myself with 187 watts of power. I went into this bike test hoping to show a stronger heart and legs. BUT... that is not what happened. Through this disappointment I have learned a few things.... I'd like to share them with you.

My Ipod does help me put my blinders on and I did loose it 5 minutes into the "race". It fell.

My emotions do drive my ability to perform. Some events in my personal life have made me sad lately. Sadness does not lead to good output... but anger does for me. A good friend of mine once said, don't cry during the race. It upsets your GI. I think sadness upsets my straight line. Rest in peace Liam Gabriel McLaughlin.

My legs are no excuse. I had them worked on on Monday morning and truthfully they felt good. I feel like I am turning a corner with this rehab and it excites me! I see a specialist on 5/4.

My BFF gave me the best advice this morinng... "Back pocket it Jen. You know we used to TT every Thursday and we won some and lost some, but we still got stronger. This is no different. You just have to finish those 112 miles... go get back on the bike." I do love her for that!!

Progress...

Well..It's been two weeks since the Half Ironman in Oceanside and I'm get back to it!

My foot/calf issue is getting better. I am icing it and going to see another doctor here in Chicago in the next week or so. The Sports Med guy in AZ was amazing and I am following his orders in the meantime. The taping is working and the pool running is proving to be a good challenge. Pool running is beating the mind freeze... and today I managed an hour and a half. That's an all time record for me! I have found that I like doing it in the endless pool as the current strength keeps me focused. My IPOD makes it more bearable as well. I have to admit, I do sing along!!

Riding.. I'm back on my bike again. I logged over 100 miles this week. Not to shabby! It feels good to be back in that schedule. I rode outside yesterday in Naperville with my friend Luddy at a Team In Training supported ride. Luddy, as I may have mentioned before, is an incredible rider! He can bike me under the table in moments. To say the least, all 53 miles yesterday were HARD! I like the feeling of having your legs feeling like they might detatch at your hips.

The swim... We had our swim test this week on Thursday morning. I set my goal very aggressively at 1:10. It was a long shot but something I'd like to see in myself in the future. I was happy to swim in the lane next to Bus. Bus is a good swimmer with a great sense of humor. I challenged myself to never loose sight of Bus' feet. I enjoy "chasing" the rabbit. Some people are fast because they internally challenge themselves, and some need to be the greyhound on the track. I am a rabbit chasing kind of gurl! This could be a downfall for me, but something I can work on in the future. My final average for the 10 * 100 was 1:18ish. AND...I put it all out there in the water. When I finished the last one, I crawled on to the deck and layed on my back gasping for air.

Next week... Rest week.. which really means a bike test and a run test with quiet days in between. Coaches are such a tease! Does testing really sound like rest to you?

Back to Chicago

Welcome to Chicago Midway airport where the local time is 4pm. Yes... that's right. I am back.

I am back to the place where this journey is about to take off. AND.. I'm excited! I am ready to put the rubber down and make good things happen. I had a bracelet made for my birthday this year. It says "Jen hungry Ironman Wisconsin 2009". It is a constant reminder of what the next 5 months is all about. I can't wait!! I can't wait to get started on the little goals I have for the next month. AND.. I really can't wait to be so tired from some awesome workouts. There is something about that feeling rippling through your body that feels oh so good!!!

So.. watch out Chicago. I am a more determined, more single minded individual then when I left. Phoenix was the trip I need to center myself and now I am ready. Let's go! It's GAME ON!

Five Months

It's five months today when each of the people sitting at the table above will hear.. YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! (well except for Dan.. he is doing IM LOU). This realization today has me a bit shook up. I just went back to the Sports Med doctor this morning and have been sentenced to pool running for my plantar fascitis and bone spurs. They do great work at this office... but I got the itch to get the run worked on. I want to feel my legs stretch as I run through the marathon. Being hurt is probably the toughest thing mentally that I have ever had to overcome. Training when you feel great is EASY~ but when you are hurt it take more planning, more accomodation, and more time. I'm not giving up!! I will follow doctors orders and in one month... this whole saga will be forgotten!

Oceanside Half Ironman Race Report

It turns out that I would learn more from this Half Ironman then any other race I've ever done. On the night before the race, I was unable to walk without pain in my left foot. I spoke to my coach and we discussed doing the swim and bike portion of the race and pulling from the run. I have never DNFed any race I have started. I was brought to tears as I considered this, but knew it might come true. Afterall, I was having a hard time walking the two blocks to dinner, let alone 13 miles.

Race Morning: We got up early and started the breakfast routine and gathering of items. We would be putting everything in backpacks and riding our bikes to the start. It was down the hill about a mile. I felt completely rushed by the girls I was staying with but was trying to make the best of it. We made the start down the hill. We got to the transition area with about two hours to race start. I love transition area on the morning of a race. The energy that is present there, is like no where else. I had put my timing chip into the pressure point in my calf and covered it with compression socks which made me able to walk. It was a relief! I started the day thinking, I would be able to finish this race.

Swim: It was so cold on race morning. I didn't want to take the layers of clothing off and put on my wetsuit, but I finally gave in. I put gloves on my feet to keep them warm. The swim start went well, but as we turned around the turn around the sun was blinding. I made my way through traffic back to the finish. I ended up with a time of 33 minutes. Two minutes slower then last year, but the 24th fastest women out of the water.

I spent an eternity in transition. REALLY.. my time was 11 minutes. This is not something laughable... its just not right. AND as I look back. I have no idea what I was doing that whole time. I didn't even put on socks!!!

Bike: Out onto the bike course I went. This was a familiar ride for me, as I raced it last year. The course felt good to my legs and it was speedy. There was more wind then last year. At mile 30 of the course there is a steep climb. I was rolling along the aid station just before the big hill and had just filled up with water and gatorade. SO half way up the monster of a hill, I decided to get rid of the water weight. I stopped my bike and dumped all the water out of the aerobottle. The end result was I couldn't get back on my bike to go up the hill because the hill was so steep. I had to walk my bike to a place where I could start perpendicular to the hill. This is such a rookie mistake!! The rest of the bike ride was pretty uneventful. I had "Human" by the Killers stuck in my head. And.. I was just cranking along enjoying the beautiful views and the wonderful vibe.

T2: I got into T2 and was starving for oreos. Such a weird thing to crave during a race. I found Chips Ahoy in my backpack and started eating them. I should also mention that with about two miles to go on the bike, I took 800 mg of ibproufen to ensure I would be able to run. I left T2 and I felt pretty strong. I started running and the pain started up my left leg again. As I went through the unexpected sand portion of the course I started walking. At first, I thought I would be able to run/walk. But the more I ran, the more my leg hurt and I was worried about the duration of the 13 miles. SO... I started walking and reminding myself to keep my head held high. I made it this far and I would finish. When you walk... you have lots of time to think. Thinking is not so good in a race. You think about all the things you could've done different to make this a better day. I was so slow in walking that I saw all my teammates run facing me on the out and back course and then pass me. Many gave me high 5's. Green even fnished the race before I finished walking my first loop. And my BFF almost caught me to do the same. As I was at mile 5, I saw my friend WJ and he gave me a BIG hug. I started sobbing! I never wanted this race to end up that way. I walked to the turnaround and then again onto the course. I was half way and trying to figure out how long I had been out here and if I would make the cutoff in time. I ran into Flyboy at about mile 8. He said he would walk with me for a while and chit chat. This is a blessing because last year Flyboy was my lil buddy on the run. I picked him up on a lawnchair at mile 3 and we did the rest of the race together. SO... he and I walked. And I told him all about the characters I met out there today, my swollen fingers, and my concern about finishing in time. He was reassuring me the whole way. And even teased that my walking was making him sweat. What a great guy!!!! We went together for about 5 miles. And then, we got to the place where Flyboy parked his car. I bid him goodbye.. and continued the walk home to the finish. As we walked over the bridge to finish, all these people had their gear and their medal and were on their way home. Talk about being out there a long time!!! One women suggested that I start to run.. I'm pretty sure I gave her the "you must be kidding look". I did do a little jog going into the finish chute. I was so emotional, pumping my fist and crying. It had been a rough day for me, but somehow I managed to stick it together and finish. I finished 25 minutes slower then that year before. This isn't a good marker however... because I cut my foot open the year before!

I ended up with some battle scars... really bad blisters on both my feet and a terrible sunburn. I did walk away knowing... that I am stronger then I believe I am and alot more tough mentally.

Thank you to all of you who followed my online.

My Precious

Just wanted to check in with a quick note to say... my bike made it to AZ. It had one small issue, which was fixed quickly by the bike shop down the street. The front skewer somehow got all twisted around and wouldn't lock properly. Something about the possibility of my front tire flying off was a bit nerve racking!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!! I also had the bike shop guy look over my reassembly work for the "confidence factor". I scored a B on the reassembly. I need to crank those screws down a bit harder next time. I called and thanked my teacher, the Ludster for all his knowledge!! He is the best! Some triathletes don't want to share the knowledge they have with others for fear they might teach someone that would get faster then them. I think Luddy knows I am just so far out of his league that he doesn't worry about this sort of thing. OR maybe it's because I am like a second sister to him.. but either way.. I am thankful for learning. AND.. I promise to pay it forward some day.

Off to ride my precious in this beautiful Arizona sunshine!! I really do miss living here.

Thanks for the well wishes on my bike's arrival.

Sunshine days, Jen
